USE This lanyard is specifically designed for arborist work as well as work at heights. The lanyard is designed to be used as part of a fall protection system. Should it be used for fall arrest a relevant energy absorbing device should be integrated into the system. The lanyard is not designed to be used as an energy absorbing device. The lanyard should be connected to a full body harness (class III or CE/EN 361) using a connector rated CE/EN362. Should the Volcano lanyard be used as part of a fall arrest system the overall length (energy absorber and Volcano lanyard) should not exceed 2 meters You must verify that the lanyard is compatible with all the other elements of your fall protection system: fall arrest harness CE/EN361, connectors CE/EN362 and shock absorbing lanyard CE/EN355. This device is Personal Protection Equipment and as such should be allocated individually to a competent person to be used for the lifespan of the system. WARNINGS The Volcano lanyard should be protected from sharp edges and/or any mechanical abrasion and cutting circumstances. The Volcano lanyard is sensitive to humidity and frost losing some of its resistance over time, especially abrasion. The lanyard should be regularly rechecked during these times. A fall arrest harness is the only device designed for human body fall arrest. The Volcano lanyard is made of Aramide, polyester and polyamide. The normal storage temperature for the Volcano lanyard should never exceed 80 degrees Celsius. The melting point for polyamide is 230 degrees Celsius, 260 degrees Celsius for polyester and 500 degrees Celsius for Aramide. A rescue plan should always be clearly prepared before and during usage of this equipment. It is recommended that users of this lanyard should undergo a thorough physical assessment prior to usage to ensure they are fit for work. MAINTENANCE The Volcano lanyard should never be exposed to chemical agents, specifically acids which might destroy the fibres without leaving any visible traces Avoid unnecessary sunlight exposure during usage. During storage the Volcano lanyard should be kept away from direct U.V exposure, humidity and heat. During transport the same advice should apply. Cleaning can be done using clear fresh water with the possible usage of a specialized rope detergent and a synthetic brush. Disinfection can be done using an appropriate product however it should be checked to have no impact on synthetic fibres. Drying should be done away from a source of UV and heat. Prior to, during and after usage all parts of the lanyard should always be checked carefully by a competent person. The Volcano lanyard should be thoroughly checked every 3 months during frequent usage and ever year at least during infrequent usage. Regular inspection should be carried out by a competent person on a regular basis to ensure user safety and product strength. Any modification or alteration is prohibited Damaged sections should never be covered using adhesive tapes. This equipment is for Personal Protection. Any usage done by persons other than the allocated user could lead to invisible fatal damages on the product. LIFE SPAN Life span of a product is defined as teh storage period prior to first use plus the usage time Product life span depends on usage - frequent vs. Occasional Usage, UV's, humidity and abrasive action all affect the product's inherent properties Under ideal storage conditions the Volcano Lanyard can be safely stored for up to 5 years without any major changes to its inherent properties. Maximum usage lifespan: - Intensive usage - 6 months - Average usage - 3 years - Infrequent usage - 10 years Warning: those are indicative references. Inspection is key in determining the products usability. The overall product lifespan is limited to 10 years in storage and 15 years overall (storage plus usage). The Volcano lanyard should be retired should there be: - Visual damage noticed during inspection - Exposure to chemicals - Any doubt as to safe usage - Used to stop a fall WARNING This user sheet is not exhaustive and in no case should the examples of poor usage and inspection listed above considered final. There are other possible cases that should not be overlooked and cannot be listed here. Work at height is inherently dangerous nad can lead to serious accidents and result in possible death. Checking clearance below users when working at heights should be carried out prior to any usage of the lanyard. This is to ensure that in case of a fall the user will not contact with the ground and/or hit any object displayed in his fall path. This product should only be used by a competent person or under supervision from a competent person. Overlooking these rules can lead to serious injuries and/or death Second hand equipment should not be used. The user is responsible for his/her own actions and decisions. The lanyard should have this warning sheet clearly attached and visible at the time of purchase. The reseller is responsible for having this notice translated in the user's relevant language. Anchor points during use should display a resistance of a minimum of 10kN. ARBORIST USE : In the case of use of the Volcano lanyard, Beal strongly recommends the use of only two possible knots: the Valdotain and an asymmetrical triple wrap Prussik knot. Only triple action self locking carabiners are accepted when connection the lanyard to the harness during tree work. Excessive speed when descending on a self locking knot (Prussik type) should be avoided in order to minimize damage on the sheath of the rope and avoid premature terminal rope failure. Relevant training is required prior to using this product. Prior to using Prussik knots or a Valdotain, the user must ensure the Volcano lanyard and the working rope are compatible. Relevant training on the usage of self locking knots and rope access should be undertaken by end-users prior to first usage of this device.
